At Peña Txuri Surf Eskola, we are incredibly lucky to see every day how the ocean transforms people. However, there are students who arrive at our beach in Sopelana and end up transforming us. Today we want to share the story of Xabi, a vital student for our family and the best ambassador of our adaptive surfing project.
Through the waves, we have discovered that the ocean knows no barriers. When passion, support, and inclusion come together, the result is pure magic. Xabi’s story is a reminder that surfing is, above all, freedom.
Discovering a New Freedom in the Sea
For many people with functional diversity, daily life can be full of obstacles. But the water has the power to change the rules of the game. As Xabi’s own family explains with great emotion, he has always seen «life from his position and suddenly he has discovered that in another environment, with other people, he has another freedom, another speed».
And the truth is, Xabi doesn’t just get in the water to pass the time. He «enjoys every moment, every wave and every time he falls off the wave». That overflowing passion is contagious for everyone sharing the lineup with him. Those of us who watch him evolve know it clearly: «He loves surfing, he is passionate about this sport and shows many people that there really are no limits to surfing».
An Attitude That Transforms Our School
If there is one thing that characterizes Xabi, it’s the energy he gives off the moment he steps on the sand. As our instructors say, «Xabi experiences surfing in a super exciting way, with a ton of enthusiasm». But his impact goes far beyond the surfboard.
His way of facing challenges is a daily lesson: «He has an incredible attitude, always super positive, not only when surfing, but in life». And this is fundamental for our school. We are enormously proud that the youngest kids in our summer camps get to spend time with him, «because in the end we don’t realize how lucky we are many times and he really reflects that».
It doesn’t matter if the Cantabrian Sea is rough or if the day is gray; Xabi «is always happy, always positive, it doesn’t matter if there are really bad waves, he comes with a smile and gets in the water because he enjoys it a lot». As a team, we confess that his presence makes it so that «the people who are part of this family see things differently and value things for what they truly are».
More Than a Sport: A Family and an Inclusive World
Our goal with our adaptive surf lessons is not just to teach technique, but to create a safe space where everyone belongs. Hearing Xabi’s family say that «at Peña Txuri we have found a different world than what we were used to, where we feel totally included» is the greatest achievement in our history.
For Xabi, the school in Sopelana has become a refuge and a space for personal growth, «where Xavier feels like one of the group and where he feels very supported in an environment that is not his close family». It is moving to watch him «discover that outside his family there is a world where he enjoys himself, feels loved and feels like one of the group».
The Growth of Our Adaptive Surfing Project
Creating a 100% inclusive environment requires effort, dedication, and resources. The management of Peña Txuri Surf Eskola recalls how «the adaptive surfing project has always been done altruistically and the problem we always had is that we started with a small group of surfers».
But the strength of students like Xabi and the dedication of our instructors made the project grow unstoppably. Today, we can proudly say that «thanks to the support of Red Eléctrica, I think we have been able to make a much more powerful project, much bigger and that is here to stay for many years to come».
