“I’m Sol Borelli, I’m 17 and I’m from Lanzarote.” That’s how Sol introduced herself in April 2026, in her Alumn@ del mes (Student of the Month) video. Argentinian by blood, Canarian by residence and, as far as we’re concerned, Basque at heart, Sol is the 2025 U18 world champion and part of our competition and high-performance team. She won gold in the Girls U18 division of the 2025 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship at Punta Rocas (Peru) on 14 December 2025, Spain’s first women’s title at the event.
A title that crowns a whole process
For Sol, winning the world title is “incredible”, but it’s not just about the trophy: “The most important thing about this title is the process behind it: the hours of work, the discipline, the sacrifice you put into something you really love.”
At the eskola we threw her a surprise celebration, complete with a guard of honour of surfboards, in the pouring rain. “I thought it was the usual hot chocolate we have every year and I was stunned. I couldn’t believe it,” she remembers. “Sometimes it looks like I don’t show my emotions very well, but inside…” What touched her most was hearing Naroa talk about hard work: “I felt so loved, surrounded by the people I spend my time with.”
Training at Peña Txuri
Sol trains with the high-performance team led by Aritza Saratxaga, and you can tell when she talks about him: “Sometimes it’s pretty tough, but I think that’s because he wants to show us we can bring out the best in ourselves.” Some days there are two or three sessions: “We push really hard, and when it’s time to compete you feel really strong.”
She shares the water with high-level surfers like Yago, Eder, Trigueros and Diego, and that helps her improve too: “I don’t just learn from what he tells me, but also from what he tells them: the mistakes, the things they need to work on.” When Yago flies above a wave, she’s watching. If you don’t know his story, here’s how Yago Domínguez went from summer camps to the surfing elite.
The hardest part? Getting in the water very early, when it’s freezing. “But then those sessions are so worth it, like when we go to Mundaka: in the morning you don’t feel like getting in at all, but then it’s so worth it.” If you’ve never surfed it, here’s why Mundaka is one of the best left-hand waves in the world.
A family, not just a team
“Ever since I started training with Peña Txuri I’ve felt really at home. We’re like a family, it’s not just the training.” Sol signs off by thanking Aritza, Naroa, her family, her friends and her teammates: “My dream has come true. Let’s go for more and better.”
We’re hugely proud that she chose our team to keep growing. Especially because of what she means to all the girls and women who see Sol as someone to look up to.
Her next challenge: the Punta Galea Challenge 2026/27
Sol is confirmed for the Red Eléctrica Punta Galea Big Wave Challenge 2026/27, Getxo’s big wave contest, which we organise from the eskola. It will be her debut at La Galea. Dates, format and how to watch are all in our article on the Punta Galea Challenge 2026/27.
