How to Choose a Surf Leash: Essential Tips and Recommendations

Index

Right, let us get straight to it: choosing a surf leash is not something you should leave to chance. Although it might look like a simple accessory, it is essential for your safety and that of others in the water. Here at Peña Txuri, we have seen it all and we know how important it is to choose well. So let us talk about how to choose the right leash for you.

Why is the leash so important?

The leash is that lifeline cord that keeps your board close after a fall. We have met many people who do not appreciate it until they really need it. A good leash stops your board from becoming a dangerous projectile and helps you get back to it quickly.

Avoiding injuries and nasty situations

  • Personal safety: Stops the board hitting you on the head or other parts of your body.
  • Protection for other surfers: A loose board can cause accidents.
  • Board protection: Saves your equipment from damage.

At our surf school we always emphasise safety, and the leash is fundamental to that.

Choosing a leash based on your board

The first step is knowing what leash length you need for your board. The general rule is that the leash should be roughly the same length as your board.

  • Shortboards: Use a 6-foot leash.
  • Funboards: Go for a 7-foot leash.
  • Longboards: You will need a 9-foot leash.

This ensures the leash is not too short, which could cause the board to bounce back at you, or too long, which could tangle.

Environmental considerations

The type of waves and spot also matters. If you usually surf in rocky or reef spots, a shorter leash is better to avoid getting tangled. In beach breaks with sandy bottoms, you have more freedom to choose length.

Leash material and thickness

The best leashes are made from urethane, a durable, elastic material that holds up well in all conditions. Thickness ranges from 5 to 8 mm: thinner for small waves, thicker for big and powerful waves.

Key parts: the cuff and the swivel

The cuff is the part that attaches to your ankle. Make sure it is comfortable and does not pinch. The swivel connects the cord to the cuff and prevents tangling. A good swivel is essential for a quality leash.

When to replace your leash

No leash lasts forever. Replace it if you notice cracks, cuts or if the Velcro no longer holds well. There is nothing worse than losing your board in the middle of a session because your leash snapped.
