Common Beginner Surfer Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Index

When we start surfing, we all make mistakes. It’s part of the learning process, and at Peña Txuri we see it every day. Some mistakes are inevitable, but others can be avoided with a little information. So, let’s go over some of the most common mistakes we see in beginner surfers here on Sopelana beach.

Choosing the wrong board

One of the first mistakes many people make is choosing a board that’s too advanced for their level. It’s tempting to want that short, thin board you see in videos, but to start out you need something with more volume and stability. Here are a few options:

  • Funboards: Ideal for learning as they offer balance and manoeuvrability.
  • Mini mals: Perfect for improving your paddling and catching more waves.
  • Longboards: A great option for small wave days.

Underestimating the sea conditions

Knowing the conditions before entering

Here in Sopelana, the sea can be unpredictable. It’s important to understand the sea conditions before you jump in. Make sure to check the beach conditions and know what to expect out there.

Knowing your level

Don’t tackle waves that are too big if you don’t have the necessary experience. As we always say at Peña Txuri, better to leave wanting more than to get into trouble.

Not warming up before entering the water

Many people skip warming up, but it’s essential to avoid injuries. Spend a few minutes stretching and doing mobility exercises before surfing.

  • Shoulder rotations: Increase range of movement.
  • Press-ups: Prepare your arms for paddling.
  • Squats: Strengthen your legs for maintaining balance.

Ignoring right-of-way rules and safety

Surfing isn’t just about riding a wave. There’s an etiquette and safety rules we all need to follow. Here are some basics:

  • Don’t crowd the peak: Leave space for others to surf.
  • Respect the priority: Don’t snake waves.
  • Communication: Let others know if you’re going for a wave.

Paddling inefficiently

As Aitor, our advanced instructor, says: “Surfing is 90% paddling and 10% riding”. Learning to paddle efficiently is key to improving. Here are some tips:

  • Use your whole arm: Paddling with bent elbows is less efficient.
  • Position on the board: Find the balance point to avoid slowing the board down.
  • Practise out of the water: Use a surfskate to improve your technique.

Getting too confident too soon

Humility in surfing is essential. Sometimes, after catching a few waves, people start feeling like pros. But remember, there’s always something new to learn.

Being supportive of those just starting out and sharing what you know is part of the essence of surfing. Here at our beginner surf courses, we always encourage camaraderie.

Not looking after your equipment properly

Looking after your equipment is as important as anything else. A common mistake is not rinsing your board properly or not checking your wetsuit after each session.

  • Rinse with fresh water: Removes salt and extends the life of your equipment.
  • Check for damage: Look for cracks or dings in the board.
  • Store properly: Protect your equipment from sun and cold.

So now you know — avoid these common mistakes and enjoy every surf session more. At Peña Txuri, we’re always ready to help you improve. See you in the water, and remember: surfing is a journey, not a destination!
