Surf spot guide for the Basque Country and Sopelana

The Basque Coast concentrates some of the best surf spots in Europe. From Sopelana beach to Mundaka, Zarautz or Hossegor, the Bay of Biscay delivers waves for every level all year round. At Peña Txuri Surf Eskola we know every spot in the area and help you choose the right one based on your level and the conditions.

Each spot has its own character: sand or rock bottom, orientation, optimal tide range, prevailing wind. Here we analyse the most relevant spots in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa with practical information for surfers of all levels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best surf spot for beginners near Bilbao?

Sopelana (La Arena and Barinatxe beaches) is the most recommended spot for beginners in the Bilbao metropolitan area. Sandy bottom, gentle waves in normal conditions and easy access. Just 20 minutes from Bilbao by metro.

When is the best time of year to surf Mundaka?

Mundaka works best in autumn and winter, from October to March, when North Atlantic swells arrive. In summer it’s usually flat or small. It’s an advanced-level spot due to the power of the wave and the current.

Are there surf spots for all levels in the Basque Country?

Yes. Sopelana, Bakio and Plentzia are ideal for beginners and intermediates. Zarautz offers consistent waves for intermediate and advanced surfers. Mundaka and Meñakoz are exclusive to advanced surfers. A local instructor will guide you better than any written guide.
