When we’re in the water, the last thing we want to think about is accidents. But, as we always say at Pe\u00f1a Txuri, better safe than sorry. Having a surf first aid kit<\/strong> handy is almost as important as bringing your board. Here’s what you should include and why it’s essential for anyone spending time in the sea.<\/p>\n

Why do you need a surf first aid kit?<\/h2>\n

Sopelana beach<\/strong> is wonderful, but like any other spot, it’s not risk-free. From fin cuts to jellyfish stings, unexpected incidents happen. Plus, sun and salt water can take their toll if you’re not well prepared.<\/p>\n

  • Cuts and scrapes:<\/strong> Fins and rocks are the most common culprits.<\/li>\n
  • Sunburn:<\/strong> The sun’s reflection off the water can intensify UV rays.<\/li>\n

    A good surf first aid kit doesn’t have to be huge, but it does need to be functional<\/strong>. Here’s a list of the basics:<\/p>\n

    • Antiseptic:<\/strong> To clean and disinfect cuts and scrapes.<\/li>\n
    • Gauze and bandages:<\/strong> Essential for protecting wounds.<\/li>\n
    • Small scissors:<\/strong> For cutting bandages or clothing if needed.<\/li>\n
    • Tweezers:<\/strong> Perfect for removing thorns or sea urchin spines.<\/li>\n
    • Sunscreen:<\/strong> Don’t forget to reapply every two hours.<\/li>\n
    • After sun:<\/strong> If sunburn is unavoidable, this will bring relief.<\/li>\n
    • Ear plugs:<\/strong> Help prevent infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      And remember, as Aitor, our instructor, says: “Surfing is 90% paddling and 10% riding”, so it’s better to be prepared for those moments between waves.<\/p>\n
