Among all the situations that can arise, there is one that we take very seriously: knowing how to act <\/span><b>if you find yourself caught in a rip current<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"boton-conocenos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.escueladesurfsopelana.com\/en\/surf-lesson-sopelana\/kids-surf-lesson\/\">SURF LESSONS FOR KIDS<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people who start surfing don&#8217;t imagine that the seemingly calm sea can hide water channels that drag us in without us hardly noticing. It&#8217;s not necessary to be on a day of big waves for this to happen. That&#8217;s why learning to <\/span><b>read the sea and react with a clear head<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an essential part of surf training.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is a rip current?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rip current is a water channel that forms when waves that have broken on the shore return to the sea at a specific point. This flow creates a constant and sometimes very powerful push that drags us <\/span><b>out to sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important thing to understand is that the current <\/span><b>doesn&#8217;t pull you under<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as many believe. At the school, we always recommend our students spend a few minutes analyzing the water conditions. What are we looking for?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas where <\/span><b>waves don&#8217;t break<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the middle of areas where they do.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water that is <\/span><b>darker and deeper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presence of <\/span><b>foam, suspended sand, or seaweed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being dragged out to sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud83d\udfe6 Pe\u00f1a Txuri Tip: choose a fixed point on the beach (an umbrella, a sign) and use it as a visual reference to avoid drifting too much without realizing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"boton-conocenos\" href=\"https:\/\/www.escueladesurfsopelana.com\/en\/surf-lesson-sopelana\/group-booking\/\">GROUP BOOKINGS<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What to do if you find yourself caught in a rip current<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Stay calm<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most dangerous thing about rip currents isn&#8217;t the water, but <\/span><b>panic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you start to stress out and waste energy trying to get out frantically, you&#8217;ll exhaust yourself. Keep a cool head and remember: you&#8217;re not alone, and there is a way out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud83d\udfe6 If you see that you can&#8217;t get out, <\/span><b>raise your arm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ask for help. Don&#8217;t shout excessively, conserve your strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Never let go of your board<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your board is your <\/span><b>best lifesaver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even if you&#8217;re not on it, hold onto it. It floats with you, keeps you visible, and gives you rest. Only let go if you&#8217;re in an extreme situation that forces you to submerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Don&#8217;t fight against the current<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s instinctive to paddle towards the shore, but <\/span><b>it&#8217;s a mistake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Going against the current only serves to exhaust you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud83d\udfe6 Instead, <\/span><b>paddle parallel to the beach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, looking for an area where waves break. That foam will help you return to shore with the sea&#8217;s momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Use the energy of the sea to your advantage<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you reach a breaking area, take advantage of the push of the waves.
